DALLAS — Coppell suffered its first district loss in five years Friday, falling 27–19 to Lake Highlands at Wildcat-Ram Stadium after building an early 10-point lead.

The matchup brought together two teams unbeaten in District 7-6A play. Coppell led 16–14 at halftime, but Lake Highlands outscored the Cowboys 13–3 after the break to take sole possession of first place.

Jackson Echols provided the early spark, catching a short pass from Carter Zingelmann and cutting inside before racing into the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown on Coppell’s opening possession. Caden Mechsner added a 21-yard field goal for a 10–0 advantage.

After Lake Highlands answered with a touchdown, Zingelmann kept the ball around the left side, delivered a stiff-arm and dove for the pylon on an 8-yard touchdown run with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful following a bad snap, and the Wildcats scored with 13 seconds left to trim Coppell’s halftime lead to 16–14.

Mechsner’s 36-yard field goal extended the lead to 19–14 in the third quarter, but Lake Highlands scored the final 13 points. Quarterback John Cawthorn’s 23-yard touchdown run put the Wildcats ahead 20–19 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion.

The decisive fourth-quarter possession covered 14 plays and included a fourth-and-15 conversion from Coppell’s 25-yard line. Lake Highlands finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass with 7:20 remaining, extending its lead to eight.

Finishing drives proved the difference. Coppell’s four scoring possessions produced two touchdowns and two field goals, and the Cowboys missed another field-goal attempt. Lake Highlands reached the end zone on all four of its scoring possessions.

Zingelmann finished with 144 passing yards and a touchdown while leading Coppell with 72 rushing yards and another score. Echols caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown, Jayden George rushed for 41 yards on 14 carries, and Jaden Bibbs added a 43-yard reception.

Coppell returns home to host the Plano West Wolves on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at Cowboy Stadium. The day also includes the Coppell ISD Community Tailgate in the Coppell High School Cafeteria Commons. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased by Monday, Oct. 19.
